Child Labor
Enforcing Alabama’s Child Labor Law is our top priority. We protect working minors and ensure their safety, well-being and education come first. By regulating where and when young people may work, we help create opportunities for youth to gain experience while safeguarding their health and future.
Teens on the Job
Part-time or summer jobs provide teens with opportunities for earning life skills, hands-on experience and money. Federal and State rules regarding young workers strike a balance between ensuring sufficient time for educational opportunities and allowing appropriate work experiences.
Workforce Alabama’s resources will help you understand what hours and jobs teens can work and help prevent workplace injuries.
The Alabama Child Labor Law
Alabama enacted its Child Labor Law to ensure the protection of young workers. Employers who wish to employ persons under the age of 18 must obtain the appropriate Child Labor Certificate(s).
- A Class I certificate is required for employing 14- and 15-year-old minors.
- A Class II certificate is required for employing 16- and 17-year-old minors.
The cost is $15 per business location. Child Labor Certificates must be posted in public view.
Record Keeping
Each employer must keep on the premises an Employee Information Form, proof of age and time records for every employee aged 18 or younger. Time records must show the number of hours worked each day, including starting and ending times and break periods.
Acceptable proof of age includes a copy of a birth certificate, driver’s license or identification card issued by a federal, state or local government agency, provided the identification includes the employee’s name and date of birth.
Employers who choose not to use the Employee Information Form must maintain a separate file for each employee aged 18 or younger that includes the employee’s name, address, telephone number, date of birth, date of hire, proof of age, school of attendance and time records.
