Public Records Policy

It is the policy of the Alabama Department of Workforce to quickly provide public records when citizens request them. All requests are subject to payment of reasonable fees when applicable, to laws that protect sensitive information, and to the responsible management of government resources.

ADOW does not process open-ended requests. You must ask for specific existing government records which are on file at the time the records request is received. ADOW has no obligation to create new records in order to fill a public records request.

Unemployment Compensation Records Not Public

Unemployment Compensation records are not available to the general public, as they contain personal identifying information . If you are a claimant requesting your own Unemployment Compensation records, complete Form 480 and submit it to the address on the form. Attorneys must contact the ADOW Legal Division at 334-956-7470.

Transcripts of Board of Appeals hearings are certified to the appropriate circuit court when an appeal has been filed. If no circuit court appeal has been filed, transcripts are only available directly from the court reporter. The Board of Appeals will provide the court reporter’s contact information upon request.

What to Expect after Making a Public Records Request

We want to respond as quickly as possible to all public records requests we receive. How quickly we can respond depends on the nature of your request. For example, if your request very clearly identifies the specific document you are looking for, we can respond more quickly than if your request is not specific or includes a large number of documents.

We are allowed by state law to charge reasonable fees in some instances for public information requests. Before processing your request, we will notify you of any estimated fees and send an invoice for pre-payment. The invoice total will include a transaction fee of 3% + $2.00 for a credit/debit card and a flat $2.00 for eCheck. Once payment is received, the records will be sent to the verified email provided.
