Top 10

things you should know about Unemployment Compensation

These guidelines will help you navigate the unemployment compensation process effectively.

Accurately report the reason you are unemployed.

When you initially file your claim for benefits, accurately report your reason for separation from your job. Providing the precise reason for your separation is important so that we can best assist you and help you avoid a fraudulent determination being applied to your claim.

Report any wages you are earning.

You must report your gross wages (before taxes are taken out) for each week you work and certify for benefits—even if you haven’t been paid yet. Be sure to report all earnings accurately during your weekly claim certification, including income from part-time or temporary work. If you receive more unemployment benefits than you’re eligible for because you failed to report earnings, it may be considered fraud and could result in prosecution.

Register with the Alabama Career Center.

Unless exempt by law, most people must register with the Alabama Career Center and keep their application up to date while unemployed to remain eligible for UC benefits. Even if you’re not required to register, you can still get help from the Career Center with job referrals, résumé building, and re-employment services.

Actively search for work.

You must search for work each week that you file a claim for benefits. If you do not look for work during a week in which you file a claim, your benefits may be denied until you show that you have resumed your work search.

Be available for work.

To collect benefits, you must certify each week that you are able, available and willing to accept suitable work. Conflicts such as attending school during normal work hours for your occupation or challenges with childcare or transportation may limit your availability and affect your eligibility. Be sure to report these issues on your weekly claim certification or by calling the Inquiry Line at 1-800-361-4524.

Develop an effective work search plan.

Many unemployment claimants do not have an effective plan for searching for work. The Alabama Career Center can help you learn about different types of jobs, their requirements and availability, and the training needed to qualify. Visit your nearest Career Center in person or go to alabamaworks.alabama.gov for more information and support in planning an effective work search.

Avoid errors and ensure proper payment of benefits.

To prevent errors in the payment of UC benefits that may result in overpayment, it’s important to carefully read all information provided when you file your claim. Improper payments can delay or deny future benefits.

Immediately report your return to work. Don’t delay.

As soon as you begin working, notify your Alabama UC office if you plan to continue claiming benefits. You can do this by answering “Yes” to the return-to-work question on your weekly claim certification or by calling the Inquiry Line at 1-800-361-4524. Report your return to work no later than the Sunday following your start date. Do not wait until you receive your first paycheck. The UC agency verifies new hires using state and national resources, so reporting immediately helps you avoid improper payments and possible fraud penalties.

Follow the rules to prevent committing fraud.

Anyone who collects UC benefits is legally responsible for following all state requirements. Failure to do so can lead to serious consequences, including prosecution, repayment with penalties, loss of future benefits, forfeiture of state and federal tax refunds, or even jail time. Refer to your Benefits, Rights and Responsibilities booklet for tips on avoiding fraud.

Know your responsibilities and ask for help.

As a UC recipient, you are responsible for knowing and meeting all rules and reporting requirements. The process can be confusing, but help is available. Review the FAQs or call the Inquiry Line at 1-800-361-4524 with any questions about your responsibilities.

Need to file an appeal hearing?

To request an appeal, you need the Document ID from the top right corner of your Notice of Determination letter; if you haven’t received this letter, your claim is still being processed, and you cannot file an appeal yet.

An appeal hearing is an informal administrative process where claimants and employers can contest decisions they believe are incorrect. During the hearing, both parties present their cases, and testimony is given under oath. Most hearings are conducted via phone and typically last between 30 minutes to an hour, with in-person hearings being rare.
