Inspections / Boilers & Pressure Vessels

Boilers & Pressure Vessels

State law mandates routine inspections for boilers and pressure vessels, helping prevent catastrophic failure and promoting safety.

Promoting Safety

Unsafe boilers and pressure vessels can and do suffer catastrophic failures. Although attributed injuries and deaths are minimal, they do happen. Catastrophic events are greatly reduced through mandatory safety inspections.

Alabama joins other states and many national and international boiler and pressure vessel safety committees to develop these important safety standards.

Inspections

In the Alabama Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act (Act No. 2000-315), state law requires boiler and pressure vessel inspections on a regular basis unless exempted by law. Operating certificates must be maintained on equipment regulated by the act.

Permits

Permits must also be obtained to install boilers and pressure vessels, including water heaters over 200,000 BTU or more than 120 gallons. Currently, there are no requirements for an installer, operator, or maintenance or service company to be licensed under the act.
